Wow, finally back in…
After being banned by Google for 7 months bie.no is finally back in the index. It must’ve helped sending those ‘reinclusion requests’.
One strange thing though – even though I have a robots.txt disallowing Google from indexing odp.php on my site they seem to have indexed it nonetheless.
Good the be back in – even though most people find this site using Yahoo! anyway – which has finally gotten the point and made a search portal that looks just like Google :)

I am wanting to move to Norway soon and I need advice on how to find work and a place to live. Some people might think I’m crazy for wanting to leave my home in sunny Southern California, USA to live in Norway but it is something I have wanted to do for some time now. I work in the field of architecture and I would like to know how easy it would be to find a job in the greater Oslo area. My wife is a english teacher and I am wondering about employment for her also. Maybe you can help. Thank you.

Are you sure you`re indexed again? I tried this one several times. No results. (?) May be you should make a test with something like this: new robots.txt ——————————– User-agent: * Disallow: User-agent: Mediapartners-Google* Disallow: /products/phpodp/odp.php Disallow: /products/phpodp/go.php User-agent: Googlebot Disallow: /products/phpodp/odp.php Disallow: /products/phpodp/go.php ——————————— I also would suggest to make crawling a little bit easier for the bots. Why don`t you make a test with some more meta-tags like: … … … ? Within your blog, your odp and your forum I additionally miss the backlink to your main page. Never thought about that? Best regards Oliver

Ups – WordPress killed the meta tags. ;-) (language, robots, description, keywords, page-topic, page-type, …)

Not enough, Bjorn. ;-) Last but not least you kicked yourself with a 302 redirect on your homepage! Have a look at this: http://gsitecrawler.com/tools/Server-Status-DE.aspx and fix your biggest Google problem (first)! If you don`t want to use http://bie.no/ as your homepage (why not?) you should try to use mod_rewrite (.htaccess) with this rule: ———————————————————- # RewriteEngine On # Options +FollowSymlinks # Options +SymLinksIfOwnerMatch # RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^bie.no [NC] # RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$ # RewriteRule ^(.*) http://bie.no/$1 [L,R=301] # RewriteRule ^index.html$ products/phpodp/index.html [L,R=301] ———————————————————- But I wouldn`t do that. The much better way would be to use http://www.bie.no/index.html without any forwards or rewrites! The next problem is the head area on your homepage: ——————————————— Have a look at http://www.w3.org/ to fix this and some more problems: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fbie.no%2Fproducts%2Fphpodp%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline in your html code. After solving all problems you should install the no-nofollow plugin for WordPress ( Look here http://www.nonofollow.net/index.php?title=Main_Page and here http://kimmo.suominen.com/sw/dofollow/ to learn why and how ) and link to fob marketing somewhere … ;-)). When everything is done try the next reinclusion request (if needed). Hopefully you will have a party after all. ;-)

Oliver, a couple of days after my post I discovered that I was no longer in the index – so I figgured it was just a glitch or something in their index (maybe an old one was shown for a couple of days?). Anyhow, a lot of good hints there my friend :) .. I didn’t know that a PHP redirect could cause so much problems(?). I will try to get this all fixed tomorrow .. right now I need some sleep. Thank you! :)

You`re welcome Bjorn. Good luck and sleep well. ;-)

Good News! My toolbar already shows a PR3 for you. Prediction looks good as well. ;-) I do not know why but it should rock. ;-) Go on man! The better your html the better your rankings will be. So fill your html with some meta tags linke “index, follow” and have a look for blogroll partners… ;-) Ragarding the DMOZ-things: I do not believe that you have to forbid Google to spider your directory. If they do not like it they will not rank it… It`s not forbidden to use the DMOZ directory – Just let them know that there is much more other stuff on your website than that. Put the most important links on all your pages and fill your blog with good ideas.

Next one: Have you already submitted your blog to: http://dmoz.org/Computers/Internet/On_the_Web/Weblogs/Personal/B/ (Can not find the “Bjorn Blog” there…)
Comment by Bjørn on 2006-05-23 18:55:24 +0000
Hmm, I haven’t done a good job promoting my blog huh? .. submitted now, so it’ll probably be seen in six to eight months time ;) I agree with you on the ‘nofollow’ issue. I’m converting to s9y anyway, which does not have nofollow (by choice) – so it will be fixed then.

Interesting. Why do you want to change?
Comment by fob marketing on 2006-05-24 14:40:19 +0000
Here you find “a few” plugins for your blog: http://wp-plugins.net/ (Don`t forget “Spam Karma 2” if you have not installed it already!) ;-) Normally it`s a two minute thing to install a new plugin: Just “upload”, “login” and click on “activate”. That`s it! Need a new design? Choose here: http://www.alexking.org/software/wordpress/theme_browser.php That`s why I`m quite interested in learning why you want to change your blog system. Personal reasons? Best regards Oliver

Last one: I think you forgot the robots.txt thing. Did you? – robots.txt info – robots.txt mistakes explained by Matt Cutts (Google)

Updated my robots.txt with your suggestion. I found this validator though, which says that the first entry which allows all should be put last: http://tool.motoricerca.info/robots-checker.phtml .. but maybe it’s wrong (that would override the two Google ones?) As for moving to s9y there are several reasons as to why I prefer it over WordPress: – Easier upload/adding of images (I’m sure WordPress has a plugin for this, but..) – Cleaner code (I’ve seen WordPress’ code…) – You can have ‘ingress’ in your blogpost, and an extended body on a separate page. – bjorn

I understand. May be it`s a bit tricky. In my opinion there is no cleaner or easier to use tool on the market than WordPress. Ìt was made for quick loads, easy use and very valid HTML code: That`s why all plugins are optional – but may be you compared the PHP part of the code? However. You can deactivate the WYSIWYG editor within your admin! It`s optional but activated by default. After that you can produce extremely valid code like mine (on Mexiko Travelnews) very easy. ;-) Once I copied a complete page of an old website from my browser (mark all, copy and paste, save) and put it into WordPress just for testing purposes. Quite nice. It works… To upload pics just chose the “write” option and click on upload. Should work very easy. What than comes is very easy too, but you have to find out the following yourself by try and error. ;-) After uploading your gallery (or just a pic for a new text) you should see your whole gallery whenever you make changes (search all option). The pics are always there – below your texts. Just “click”(!) on a pic to make use of it. Click two times to change your options (use thumbnail, large pic, …) before “sendig it to the browser”. (Should better be called “send to text!”). If you like, you can use it like that already. Otherwise you could modify your code how ever you want. May be you have not recognized the “click on the pic trick”? Regarding the robots.txt: Yes, you should always “allow” first and than go deeper… Looks good for me now. Good luck! ;-) Best regards Oliver

Thanks for the enthusiasm :D ..hehe well, about changing to s9y – yes, I was talking about the php code. And I like the fact that the entire post doesn’t show for each post when you enter a category. As for images, I don’t have an “Upload” in “Write” – I can only link to images with URL’s. Maybe I have an old version … Also, they’ve made it very easy – it’s one click to convert the blog from WordPress to s9y – all date is copied. Also, people can subscribe to each feed independently – so that people who only want to follow phpODP news can do that. Probably also possible in WordPress – but maybe I want a change!! :p Have you tried Serendipity (s9y) btw?
Comment by fob marketing on 2006-05-26 18:43:13 +0000
Hi Bjorn, you should make a test with version 2.0.2. and use the standard theme! It`s great and could be testet within 30 minutes. The next update is on the way already and will have more easy to install code cleanings for the php things. (Just upload and go on…) May be the “show all or show only a part of the text” is a “theme thing”. Normally categories are not fully shown. Want an example? I did not try Serendipity. I tested some other systems and found WordPress to be the best. Easy to install, easy to manage, easy to update, lots of plugins (also regularly updated) and most important – very easy to edit. The last one is most important if you want people to write articles into your blog. ;-) The “link to pics thing” is very strange. Don`t know why you do not have the rearl tool. Have you testet with IE already? May be it`s a problem with your browser version? (Firefox works very good, too. Never touch one of the most buggy Opera browsers…)

I forgot to mention that – if you want to cut your text somewhere else you dan put a small piece of code in your text that makes the brak for you.

Ok, you convinced me – I think maybe I’ll stick to WP some more – I’ve found some plugins that will make life easier for me ;)

Fine! ;-) Additionally WordPress 2.0.3. is already available for download! If you need detailed upgrade instructions you can find them here. In short: – Make a backup – deactivate your plugins – upload the changed files to your system – run the “/wp-admin/upgrade.php” – activate your plugins again … and go on with the newest code cleanings and security fixes. That`s cool. Isn`t it? ;-)
